So I'm on Yahoo reading about Ivan, because even
though I called my friends last night...they probably
won't evacuate...stubborn Cajuns...anyway...so I'm
reading about what a nearly direct hit could do to
N'awlins...and this is what I read:
(first paragraph)
"The worst-case scenario for New Orleans a direct
strike by a full-strength Hurricane Ivan could
submerge much of this historic city treetop-deep in a
stew of sewage, industrial chemicals and fire ants,
and the inundation could last for weeks, experts say."
(further into the story)
"Severe flooding in area bayous also forces out
wildlife, including poisonous snakes and stinging fire
ants, which sometimes gather in floating balls carried
by the current."
Incredible! Not only would the usual hurricane
problems (wind, rain, water) occur, but the freaking
FIRE ANTS would also wreak havoc! As a nearly-native
New Orleanian, I find this amazing! I knew that just
about the only way to fight fire ants is with
fire....but who knew the suckers won't DROWN!
I hope Wilson, BOXDN, etc take care and BE SAFE down
there....

Just call me a Stubborn Cajun.... I am thinking about sitting it thru.
The Ant Balls are a BIG problem in flood areas. The queen is actually
on top of the "Ball" of ants. When the ants hit a solid object the
instantly crawl on the object and start biting. They have been known to
put children into the hospital with bites.

I knew I didn't like fire ants.
Grew up in Georgia when they first started coming there, moved to
Baton Rouge where our yard was full of them, and now live near
Asheville where it's too cold in the winter for them. Hooray!!!!
My husband's relatives are in Mandeville, though, so we'll be
thinking about all of you.

Man, all this talk of fire ants makes me want to whip out the
speedball and carve up a hitchhiker!
What could it be... "LA Fire Ant", "Fire Ant Ball"
Suggestions?

Yeah, they won't drown, and even worse, a firefighter was killed here in TX about five years ago when he jumped into a flooded creek to save a kid and had an allergic reaction to one of those "floatin' balls O' ants"!!! that stung him hundreds of times!

This balling phenomena fascinates me. Here is a snapshot:

Wriggling balls of pain, I imagine.
